On October 2, 2026, department alumna Yuliia Dmytrenko met with students as part of the Visual History course, taught by Yevhen Rachkov, Candidate of Historical Sciences. She shared her experience in researching visual sources, discussed the main challenges involved in their analysis, and explored the prospects for applying digital methods in historical research.
The speaker presented the results of her research on city-view postcards and photographs from guidebooks. Particular attention was paid to methodological approaches to the analysis of visual sources, including the combination of semiotic analysis and content analysis. An important component of the research was the creation of a relational database, which made it possible to systematize a substantial body of visual materials and trace the ways in which urban space was represented.
Another part of the meeting focused on the alumna’s professional experience. Yuliia currently works at Malynivka Academic Lyceum No.1 and Mospanove Lyceum of the Malynivka Territorial Community in Chuhuiv Raion, Kharkiv Oblast. In 2025–2026, she also participated in the charitable project SpivDiia for Children, aimed at addressing educational losses and supporting children’s psycho-emotional recovery and implemented in partnership with UNICEF.
We thank Yuliia for the engaging and informative meeting, her openness to professional dialogue, and the opportunity to learn about her practical experience in researching visual sources. We wish her continued professional success!
