On October 28, 2026, the Art History Club and the Club of Historiography, Source Studies, and Auxiliary Historical Disciplines held a joint meeting titled “Archives through the Eyes of a Source Scholar, Sources through the Eyes of an Archivist.”
The guest speaker was Vladyslav Berkovskyi, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, and former Director of the Central State Archive of Foreign Archival Ucrainica and the H.S.Pshenychnyi Central State CinePhotoPhono Archive of Ukraine.
During the meeting, participants learned about the organization of archival institutions, their systems of administration and oversight, procedures for the declassification of documents, and contemporary challenges related to digitization and the long-term preservation of archival materials.
Vladyslav Berkovskyi also emphasized the unique value of working with original documents and physical information carriers, which provide researchers with direct engagement with historical sources and foster a deeper understanding of the contexts in which they were created and preserved.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Vladyslav Berkovskyi for an insightful and engaging presentation, for sharing examples drawn from his professional experience, and for helping participants gain a deeper appreciation of the opportunities and challenges involved in working with archival sources.
