On May 8, 2026, at the initiative of the Department of Historiography, Heritage Studies, and Archaeology, a guest lecture was held as part of the “Methods of Historical Research” course (lecturer Olha Vovk). The lecture, titled “Culturological Approach in Historical Research”, was delivered by Yevhenii Kuzmenko, a PhD student at the M. T. Rylsky Institute of Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The event was made possible thanks to the recently signed Cooperation Agreement between this Institute and V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
The lecturer presented an overview of culture as a phenomenon and culturology as a science. Using specific research cases, he demonstrated the interconnectedness of history and culturology in modern interdisciplinary studies. Special attention was paid to the practical aspect – the analysis of cultural heritage losses during the Russo-Ukrainian war. Specifically, the focus included the Transfiguration Cathedral (11th century) and the Saints Boris and Glib Cathedral (12th century) in Chernihiv, as well as the “Tree of Life” and “Boryviter” mosaics created by Alla Horska’s team in Mariupol (mid-20th century). The lecture followed an interactive format: students tried their hand at conducting historical and culturological analysis of monuments.
We sincerely thank Yevhenii Kuzmenko for his thorough lecture and for providing students with new knowledge and skills that will be useful in their future scientific and practical activities.
