April 18 marks the International Day for Monuments and Sites worldwide and, in Ukraine, the Day of Historical and Cultural Heritage Sites. The staff of the Department of Historiography, Heritage Studies, and Archaeology extends its congratulations to colleagues engaged in the study, preservation, and promotion of cultural heritage on this professional occasion. During the war, heritage protection institutions and professionals have faced exceptionally difficult challenges – ensuring the proper safeguarding of monuments and sites threatened with destruction or damage. Under these circumstances, the consolidation of efforts among scholars, museum professionals, archivists, restorers, representatives of public authorities, and civil society is of particular importance for preserving cultural heritage as a vital component of national identity. Today, work in the field of cultural heritage protection is not only a professional activity but also a meaningful contribution to preserving historical memory, cultural continuity, and the spiritual resilience of Ukrainian society. We hope that, through the joint efforts of specialists in the field and with international support, the number of cultural heritage sites under proper protection will continue to grow, and that public awareness of and responsibility for their preservation will increase. We wish all professionals inspiration, continued success, and new opportunities in safeguarding Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
We also take this opportunity to invite colleagues to collaborate within our department’s master’s program, “Research, Protection, and Use of Cultural Heritage” (more information about the program).
