On April 10, 2025, at the initiative of the Department of Historiography, Source Studies, and Archaeology, as part of the course “Special Historical Disciplines”, a practical training on phaleristics took place. It was conducted by Vitaliy Yakovlev, Deputy Director for Research at the National Museum of Military History of Slobozhanshchyna and a graduate of the School of History of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.
The training covered the subject and tasks of phaleristics as a special historical discipline, the processes of the emergence and formation of award systems in various European states and on Ukrainian lands, and characterized the specifics of phaleristic artifacts as a component of museum collections, in particular the features of their accounting and use in research and exhibition work.
V. M. Yakovlev spoke about the ways in which orders, medals of honour, badges, pins, and tokens enter museum collections and shared his own experience in their research and cataloguing with the students. Following this, the students were invited to imagine themselves as museum staff and fill out a standardized scientific record for a phaleristic item.
We sincerely thank esteemed V. M. Yakovlev for an interesting and informative training! It became a significant step to prepare students for their future work as professional historians.
