Meeting of the Club of Historiography, Source Studies, and Auxiliary Historical Disciplines

On March 2, 2026, a meeting of the Historiography, Source Studies, and Special Historical Disciplines Club was held, featuring a presentation by fourth-year student Olena Tykhonova titled “Fashion Periodicals of the Late 19th Century: European Trends on the Streets of Kharkiv.”

In her presentation, the researcher highlighted the distinctive features of periodicals as a source for the history of fashion, examined the specific language of fashion at the end of the nineteenth century, and analyzed women’s fashion images of the time, as well as the impact of women’s emancipation on the formation of style and everyday dress. Particular interest was generated by the author’s comparison of fashion images presented in European magazines with photographs of Kharkiv women from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. This approach made it possible to raise the question of whether European fashion remained merely a distant foreign ideal or in fact became a model for imitation within Kharkiv’s urban environment.
