Art History Club Meeting

On 26 February 2026, a meeting of the Art History Club of the Department of Historiography, Heritage Studies, and Archaeology took place. The first meeting of the spring semester was devoted to a semiotic analysis of the film All Quiet on the Western Front (1979, directed by Delbert Mann). The presentation was delivered by second-year student Ihor Babak, while the invited discussant was Yevhen Rachkov, Candidate of Historical Sciences and Associate Professor of the Department of Historiography, Heritage Studies, and Archaeology.

In his presentation, the author aimed to examine the images and symbols of the film through the lens of semiotics. The presentation addressed the fundamental principles of semiotic theory, Roland Barthes's approach to semiotic analysis, and the ways in which semiotics can be employed to interpret visual elements and uncover their underlying meanings. The author also explored the topic of anti-war cinema as a means of preserving and promoting humanistic values.
