On 7 May 2025, a meeting of the Student Club for Historiography, Source Studies, and Auxiliary Historical Disciplines was held, during which the club’s head, Lidiia Kuzmenko, delivered a presentation entitled “A Psychoanalytic Approach to the Interpretation of Visual Sources.”
The speaker thoroughly examined the characteristics of the psychoanalytic interpretative lens, illustrating her points with examples of visual effects and camera focus techniques from iconic films. She emphasized how this methodology situates the viewer at the center of analysis, focusing on their perception and emotional responses. During the ensuing discussion, participants addressed the potential limitations of the psychoanalytic approach, the role of media production as an intermediary between author and viewer, and the necessity of integrating multiple methods in the analysis of visual sources.
We express our gratitude to Lidiia Kuzmenko for her insightful presentation and to all attendees for their active engagement.
