International Day for Monuments and Sites

On April 18, the world celebrates the International Day for Monuments and Sites, and in Ukraine - the Day of Monuments of History and Culture. The staff of the Department of Historiography, Source Studies, and Archeology congratulates colleagues engaged in historical monument preservation and heritage studies. During the war, heritage protection state bodies and public organizations faced difficult tasks of ensuring proper protection and preservation of the cultural heritage of Ukraine. We sincerely wish everyone involved in this Day peace, strength and professional achievements.

It should be noted that the lecturers of the Department are the organizers and participants of the scientific project "CITY AND WAR" aiming to explore and reinterpret diverse aspects of the cultural heritage of several key cities in eastern and southern Ukraine during the Russo-Ukrainian War (https://en.cityface.org.ua/projectheritage.html). The project is made possible by the financial support of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada). The main coordinator of the project is Assistant Professor of the Department Yevhen Rachkov.

In addition, on April 18, 2023, the scientific conference "Museum in the Global World: Innovations and Preservation of Traditions" will be held on the basis of the M.F.Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum. The conference dedicated to the preservation of national memory during the war and held within the XXIX Sumtsov Readings. The lecturers of the Department of Historiography, Source Studies, and Archaeology are the organizers and participants of the Conference: the head of the Department, Prof. Sergiy Posokhov and Prof. Sergiy Kudelko.

Conference program

Every year on 18 April, UNESCO celebrates the "International Day for Monuments and Sites," whose establishment was approved by the 22nd UNESCO General Conference (July,1983) on the initiative of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). The aim of the International Day for Monuments and Sites is to encourage local communities and individuals throughout the world to consider the importance of cultural heritage to their lives, identities and communities, and to promote awareness of its diversity and vulnerability and the efforts required to protect and conserve it. The Day of Monuments of History and Culture was established in accordance with the Presidential Decree of August 23, 1999, on the initiative of scientists and employees of state bodies for the protection of cultural heritage of Ukraine.
